(J) Ba's demise


A family in Gujarat was puzzled when the coffin of their dead mother (Ba) arrived from the US. It was sent by one of her daughters.

The body was very tightly squeezed into the coffin, with no space left at the sides when they opened the lid. A letter on top was addressed to her brothers and sisters.

Dear Chandrakantbhai, Arvindbhai, Smitaben and Varsha,

I am sending Ba's body to you, since it was her wish that she should be cremated in the compound of our ancestral home in Gujarat.

Sorry, I could not come along as all of my paid leave is consumed.

You will find inside the coffin, under Ba's body, cans of cheese, ten packets of Tobler chocolates and 8 packets of badam (almonds). Please divide these amongst all of you.

On Ba's feet you will find a new pair of Reebok shoes (size 10) for Mohan. There are also two pairs of shoes for Radha's and Lakshmi's sons. Hope the sizes are correct.

Ba is wearing 6 American t-shirts. The large size is for Mohan. Just distribute the rest among yourselves.

The two new jeans that Ba is wearing are for the boys.

The Swiss watch that Reema wanted is on Ba's left wrist.

Shanta maasi, Ba is wearing the necklace, earrings and ring that you asked for. Please take them off her.

The six white cotton socks that Ba is wearing must be divided among my nephews.

Please distribute all these fairly.

The Coconut Seller

9th November 2013       I approached the coconut seller and asked, "how much for one?" "30 for malai wala and 25 for paani wala" "Patli malai wale ke liye kitna?" "30 memsaab", he said.        I asked for one with the thin malai. It was delicious. The first sip from the straw, and images of coconut trees and paddy fields flashed in my mind. La La Land Review

23rd Jan 2016 I watched La La Land today.  I’m not really one for musicals, but the story completely overpowered the ‘genre’ of the film. The trailer didn’t excite me much, but I was curious to know why it won SO many Golden Globes, and besides – it was directed and written by Damien Chazelle, the same man who made ‘Whiplash’; another film I was awed by.  I still have first-screening frenzy, but I’ll try to look at this as clearly as I can. This was not just a musical. It is an honest and heartfelt film about dreamers; a subject which is very relatable to us all. Emma and Ryan are so cute and charismatic, and it’s lovely to see how their ambitions unfold and how one makes the other push forward and become someone more. I don’t think it’s a love story, but a story about the honesty and drive with which the characters dream. However you do root for the two of them, and the love story is beautiful to watch at parallel. I was left speechless choked up by the end....
